A coupon, in its abstract sense, is a privelege given to customers in order to purchase goods or services with a discount or rebate. A piece of paper called ticket or document is its tangible form. These coupons are presented to manufacturers in exchange for some financial discount. Actually, coupons in the form of paper is a traditional one. Nowadays, due to wide influence of computers, coupons are normally found in mobile devices and internet. This is done by having the coupon code on a mobile device such as cellphones and websites. This process is more preferable because it does not cost the manufacturer to print the coupons. Besides, almost everyone uses cellphones and computers to access coupon codes for rebate.

The word coupon is originally a French word but has different pronunciation in English, British and Canadian language.

The use of coupon is a marketing strategy wherein customers are enticed to buy an item or service at a said price and a rebate is given to them. Coupons are found in magazines, newspapers, leaflets, websites, and mobile devices. Various products such as clothing, foods, drinks, cosmetics, and many others are sold with discounts.

The idea of the use of coupon can be traced way back 1887, when Asa Candler teamed up with Coca-Cola Company in promoting their carbonated drinks by distributing coupons to potential consumers. Some of the said coupons were mailed to Americans. Its widespread use was initiated by Charles William Post also known as C. W. Post, who was an American cereal breakfast manufacturer.

These discount forms were first produced in papers. But when coupons began to exist in internet and mobile devices, tickets or paper coupons are not widely used anymore. One can avail discounts by getting coupon codes of such product offered. Customers who get online coupons are obliged to print the said thing for themselves unlike before wherein producers are the ones printing and giving them away to their potential customers. Thus, online coupons mean less cost in favor to the manufacturer.

Couponing, mostly online couponing, is good for the manufacturer and consumers as well. However, a wise consumer should take some things into consideration before availing into discount coupons. Though it offers benefits like saving small or big amount of money in discounts and helping you live within your means, it may give one some disadvantages. So, to save someone from the drawbacks of using coupons, one should be conscious on his or her shopping habits. There are cases when ones printer is not adjusted and ones cost in printing is more than the savings got from discounts. Some coupons may be about to expire. Some of the said discount tickets are valid only to a particular store. It would be better if one should find out whether such coupon is acceptable to various shops or retail stores. It would be a waste of time, effort, and printer ink if the coupon is acknowledged only by few establishments. We should also consider those vendors who do not acknowledge ticket discount. Though lots of manufacturers are very much sincere in giving rebates to products bought in good quality, we should also not lose sight of the fact that there also manufacturers who are offering discounts to products which are not of good quality. Customers should be conscious on need of the product offered with a discount. It may be that such product is actually of less use or no use at all to the consumer. It does not make sense for someone to buy the good just because of the great discount earned yet such good is not needed. It defeats the purpose of saving money or resources.

So, the next time you decide to buy a particular good or service, make sure that it is really worth it. See to it that you bought the product not just because of the promo or great deal of discount offered and that you get the discount without sacrificing quality.

Since launching Google Checkout earlier this year, we’ve received a lot of feedback on the features you’d like to see. Coupons and discounts have been a big hit so far with buyers, but until now, it’s been hard to create coupons without being an API wizard. Now, you can create coupons right from the merchant center. You can specify $-off discounts, %-off discounts, and specify such things as “one per customer,” “new customers only,” and so on. To help you better optimize your discounts and sales, you can even track usage of the coupons and get reports.

Try it now on the Coupons page (requires a Checkout merchant account). After you’ve created a coupon or two, we’d love to hear your feedback.
